The Auto Road's premiere attractions each year are its annual races: one by foot, one by bicycle, and until recently, automobile racing!  Below is some general info, website links and racing records.  Each event is individually sponsored and open to anyone who qualifies!

Welcome to the Mount Washington Road Race, organized and directed by Granite State Race Services and hosted by the Mount Washington Auto Road.  If you are a runner and want to test your meddle on one of the world's toughest uphill foot races, sign up (in late winter) and maybe your name will be drawn!  Registration for the entry lottery must be completed between March 1 and 15.  Check out the Road Race website for details, or call (603) 863-2537 for info.  Here are the all-time records for the 7½-mile climb:

So you think you're a good cyclist?  Try out for the ultimate uphill race!  Open to as many as 600 cyclists, this is the real deal; the bike ride of a lifetime; the toughest hill you can imagine!  Factor in the "world's worst weather" and you have what is probably the most unique bike race on the planet.  Held every August, the race is open for registration in February and March.  It is really a fundraiser that benefits the Tin Mountain Conservation Center, whose mission is to promote awareness and appreciation of the natural world through programs for citizens of all ages.  So come on up and see if you've GOT THE RIGHT STUFF!

Though the days of automobile racing up Mt. Washington have recently ended with the 100th anniversary of Climb to the Clouds in 2004, the celebration lives on, as we remember the era of classic cars that have climbed Mt. Washington.  Don't miss the Vintage Car Weekend, held annually for two days in July.

Past auto racing on the mountain has become an integral part of its history.  Below are the all-time speed records for vehicular travel from base to summit.  One noteworthy record not listed below was made by Jerry Driscoll of Vermont in 1999: He set the all-time speed record of 113 mph!  Some people can't imagine even driving 20 mph!
